HEROIN-ADDICTION, IS THERE MORE
Heroin-Addiction, there was a time when heroin was sold on the street in a $2.00 bag. Then it was sold as halves (15 bags) and then
as half a half (7 bags) and then as a bundle (25 bags). The last of these was the quarter, (4 spoons). That was a time when
drug dealers really got rich. The bags soon moved on to what is called mexican mud. The guys turned into pimps and the
girls turned into ho's. It was a time when the saying was "Pimps Up, Ho's Down".
It was called china white, diesel, smack and scramble
It was a party that turned into a nightmare. Some people started out snorting, others were shooting up. The overdoses and
deaths all ended up in the emergency room. Some party that was?

The dealers who sold heroin on the street were called hustlers, scramblers and they reached the immediate users on the street.
The people who bought and packaged the drug for sale and who made all of the money were known as kingpins. And they did make
a lot of money "Millions."

In the urban areas, it was completely destroyed, the people, the buildings in the neighborhood. there were groups of
people who took up residence in vacant buildings and used them for shooting galleries. There were young women who
prostituted themselves for money so they could buy heroin. Heroin-Addiction was king on the street.
Heroin-addiction was so strong that when the dealers came on the porches to sell, there was a line down the street and around the corner
of people waiting to buy the drug. there bodyguards with guns surrounding the dealer, so that he was not robbed and he got the right amount
of money for his product.
People came from near and far to purchase (cop) the drug. This drug had a funny way of causing people to become sick, violently ill if they did
not cop, (get off E) what they needed to get the sickness off. Heroin-addiction manifested many maladies.

The people, users were from all walks of life. Teen-agers, working people, business people, hustlers of all different trades, the number runners,
the entertainers, actors, players and just average everyday people. Mothers, daughter and sons all came to get heroin. It was an addiction that had
no peer, heroin-addicted.
People in wheelchairs, on crutches, some with disabilities I cannot name. It was a spectacle and a phenomena never witnessed before. Heroin
addiction caused people to commit all kinds of crimes, from robbery, burglary, pickpocket, con games, prostitution (male and female). And all this
because the person happened to go to a party innocently enough and was introduced to this party drug and became heroin-addiction.
Heroin is sometimes glamorized. It is the most rapidly acting of the opiates and the most abused. It is everywhere, in our schools and it reaches
across all socio-economic boundaries. It is highly addictive and sometime fatal. Just recently we lost a great entertainer to drug overdose.

Heroin-addiction, is a tragic situation, causing great suffering and death. Heroin is usually injected but it can also be snorted or smoked. Users
inject because the intensity of the high is greater, and chronic users may inject up to five times or more each day. The user gets his "rush"
immediately, in seconds. When it is snorted or smoked, it may take up to 15 minutes for it to take effect. The rush is not the same.
RISK OF USE
* Intravenous use of heroin (any other substance) with non-sterile needles and syringes
* The risk of contracting blood borne pathogens such as HIV and hepatitus.
* The risk of contracting bacterial or fungal endocarditis and possibly venous sclerosis
* Poisoning from contaminants added to "cut" or dilute the heroin.
* Chronic constipation
* Physical dependence can result rom prolonged use and the cessation of use causes withdrawal pain.
* Decreased kidney function.
There is a story told about a user who had numerous misses in his arm (that is when you miss the vein). The arm was swollen and grotesque.
After a while the skin broke and he continued to shoot heroin into the open veins. It is amazing that he continued to live with that gaping hole
in his arm. Some people offered him money to study his arm, (this phenomena). Can you imagine this?
What Addiction Is Not
The withdrawal syndrone from heroin-addiction may begin within 6 to 24 hours of non-use of the drug. However, this time frame can fluctuate with the degree of tolerance as well as the manner and amount of the dose. Symptoms may include: sweating, malaise, anxiety, depression, akathisia, priapism, extrasensitivty of the genitals in females, general heaviness, cramp like pains in the limbs, excessive yawning or sneezing, tears, rhinorrhea, sleep difficulties,(insomnia), cold sweats, chills, severe muscle and bone aches, nausea, and vomiting, diarrhea, cramps and fever. This can all be cured with one shot of heroin or a medically monitored detox. Heroin-addiction demands to be taken care of one way or the other

If the addict does not end up in jail or prison for some heinous crime or the graveyard and I want you to take a look at the graveyard. You as a user, you do not have to be here because someone has done it already and now I am telling you about it. In meetings this is what happens, people share their experience, strength and hope. The hope is that the user or ex-user will get the message and not repeat what he heard someone else say. You see it was done already and there is someone who came back whether it be from jail or from near death. And they are saying you do not have to do this. I did it for you.
BEGINNING OF THE RECOVERY PROCESS
Recovery from addiction, when talking about heroin there is a definite process. The process could begin in jail or prison. Why? because of the crime committed.During the incarceration, the user will kick cold turkey (meaning no drugs to help). If the user is lucky, he will be sentenced or mandated to a drug-alcohol-rehab.Otherwise, the user will go to prison. The prison does not provide comprehensive treatment. It does introduce the user to treatment and in some cases there is a program in place so that the user can get ready for a mandated treatment outside of prison
The other way that a user can get help is to go to a medically monitored detox in a hospital. This detox helps the user get the drugs out of his/her system but that is not enough. The hospital has to refer the user to a alcohol and drug rehabilitation center. This is the place where comprehensive treatment for the disease of addiction especially heroin-addiction takes place.
Most users who come into a alcohol and drug rehab, come in kicking and screaming. No one actually wants to stop using alcohol and other drugs but if they do not walk away and many do. They will embrace the principles of recovery from addiction. The group process in treatment is an excellent way to get a user engaged. The longer that a person stays in the treatment process, the more likely there will be a positive outcome. The suggested time to be involved in a setting for drug rehabilitation is 18 to 24 months.
When the treatment is complete, a continum of care is suggested. Some are referred to outpatient treatment others are referred to a 12 Step Program and that depends on the drug of choice. Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholic Anonymous as well as Cocaine Anonymous. You need to know that there is a 12 Step Program for all the many addictions.
