WHAT IS ALCOHOL ADDICTION
Alcoholism where does it begin? In young people (teenagers),
it begins at the parties or drinking on the corner with the boys.
In adults it begins at family functions, the club, and the neighborhood bar. In young women,
it usually begins with some kind of trauma or an unbearable event
The sign reads "Wine, Whiskey and Beer."
That is the sign at the liquor store or delicatessen. The drinker can
rarely pass it by. It appears that the drinker is drinking in the evening,
in the morning for breakfast and just a nip for lunch. It is
characterized by a persistent, habitual use even in the face of
a negative impact on the drinker's life.
The abuser drinks to get drunk. Drinks at social gatherings,
often to excess. But the drinker usually has periods of sobriety.
Some people drink to prevent withdrawal, to become normal.
An he drinks on happy or sad occasions. it has gotten
so bad that the drinker, drinks when it rains, when the sun is out or any other
daily event. The drinker drinks everyday without fail. The drinker
will become ill and go into DTs without a l'il something to drink.
It is very difficult to determine whether a drinker is abusing or is truly addicted. There are some that can hold down a job and others who cannot.
It can lead people into serious trouble and can be physically and mentally destructive. It is involved in half of all crimes, murders, accidental, deaths (DUI) and suicide
*It also can harm vision, sexual function, slow blood circulation, cause malnutrition
*Can in fact cause blackouts.
*Can cause irregular heartbeat, risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and grand mal seizure.
*It is a leading contributor to (DUI) arrest and accidental vehicular homicide.
*It slowly erodes the ability to function normally causing lack ofambition and creates bums.
THE ALCOHOLISM THEORY
The modern disease theory states that problem drinking is
sometimes caused by a disease of the brain, characterized by altered brain
structure and function
The existence of this as a disease is accepted by some within the
medical and scientific communities although critics exist. The American Medical
Association (AMA) had declared that it was an illness in 1956.
In 1991, the AMA further endorsed the dual classification of alcoholism by the International Classification of Disease under both psychiatric and medical sections.
It is a life-long disease, such as diabetes. However, if managed properly
damage to the brain can be stopped and to some extent reversed.
In addition to problem drinking, the disease is characterized by symptoms including
impaired control and, compulsive thoughts, and distorted
It can also lead indirectly, through excess consumption to physical
dependence and diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver.
The risk of developing the disease depends on many factors, such as
environment. Those with family history of are more likely to develop
it themselves. However, many individuals have developed an addiction without
a family history of the disease.
Since the consumption is necessary to develop the disease.
The availability of and attitudes towards drinking in an individual's
environment affect their likelihood of developing the disease.
